Title: PSM
Post by: Puff Daddy on June 23, 2006, 10:19:48 PM
If you read my posts, chances are you have stumbled across me running my mouth on about my Playstation Magazine, PSM. Its an independent magazine, and tends to be farely honest. I just got the new issue, issue 113 august 2006, which is titled: Is the PS3 woirth 600?

While the magazine points out that its hard to justify $600, some hardcore fans are willing to dish the money out. PSM also goes on to state that the games seem like a continuation of PS2 games, and frankly seem no different than PS2 games and that makes it appear that the PS3's great power isn't worth it when the games are still the same. Also the controller, which is motion sensorable, lacks rumble and even though it does sense motion now...it may not be used much like the wii's....since the controller is held in two hands, the controller can't be used like the wii's and be swung like a bat. It just isn't physically right. My magazine goes on and puts a positive spin to it all, and says that the PS3 will be for some, but not all...but hopefully Sony can still pull it off just like it did with the PSX and PS2.

Now....about the Wii...

Even though this is a Playstation Magazine, it talks about the Wii several times. The first being in the article that justified the PS3's price tag:

Quote
Ninteno's Wii, however, may have stle the show [E3]. While its graphics can't touch the PS3, its remote controller and fresh lineup of games (Super Mario Galaxy!) garnered the longest lines in the show's history.

The other in an article about some punk's first time at E3 because of just getting hired by PS3, which he wrote about the top 5 things at E3, number 2 was:

Quote
Nintendo Wii
On the first day of the show, members of the press got to go into the exhibit hall two hours before everyone else, and 99.9% of us went straight to go see the Nintendo Wii. Even though the line was huge, you could really feel the excitement in the air. All of the hype about the Wii had reduced us to the inner Nintendo fanboys that we all are at heart, and reminded all of us why we got into this business in the first place.

They say E3 depicts the future....if this is what a Playstation Magazine is writing, I can only imagine how great the Wii really is.

:D it will be great :D

and if not, thats not good. psm is actually one of my favorites although i much prefer pcgamer ;), because of its honesty, it doesnt act like a fanboy mag and just go on and on, its worth reading.

I have to say, not something I would expect from a Playstation magazine. Typically, console specific magazines are extremely biased, and are a generally a bad read. They showed they weren't just snobs when thinking of other consoles though. IMO, that's integrity, meaning that if there is indeed a decent single console mag, it's them. Then again, maybe their considering the Wii's self-proclaimed title as a secondary console, to go alongside an expensive console.

All that being said, I suppose I could be considered hypocritical because this is a console-centric forum. Then again, this is for us to discuss the Wii (and make off-topic ramblings) whereas a console-centric magazine is for readers to endulge themselves in the choice of console that they made.

[edit: whoops, started browsing another site and didn't finish this before posting. went back and finished it out]

PSM has been around forever, though, so I'm sure that lets them be a little more honest than other magazines that weren't around for some of the glorious days of old.  They bashed the boomerangtroller back in the day, and it's nice to see such balanced reporting in this day and age. Even if it's just a niche magazine based loosely around a single console family.
