31  Off-Topic / The Lounge / Re: 500,000 ps3 games need to be sold to make a profit on: December 04, 2006, 05:52:02 PM
This isn't neccessarilly true--it all depends on the game's set budget. See, Sony or some smaller third party company could create a Sudoku app, or a Majong game for the PS3 and it could sell 10,000 coppies and still profit.

It's the bigger games that require such a huge budget (Think Resistance, MGS 4, White Knight, etc...) that will need to sell 500,000 units to profit. Though royalties and the like are part of such big expenses, those aren't the main reason. Graphics, Sound, play the biggest role in driving costs.

So, like I said--It depends almost entirely on the particular game. Red Steel cost something like $13 million to make afterall. Red Steel will need to sell something like 300,000 coppies to profit...and it's on the Wii with it's insanely low development costs.  :-P

...just sayin
32  Nintendo Wii / Wii - General / Re: Fav Game on: December 06, 2006, 11:46:54 PM
My favorite game so far is Zelda (of course) but that's to be expected. The game has been in development for some five years and it's super-polished. The wiimote controles are great (especially fishing) and the atmosphere is amazing. Stepping out into Hyrule Field for the first time is a thing a beauty--I love it.

At a close second would be Trauma Center: Second Opinion. Lot's of challenge, just like the DS version.

It's too bad I don't have a Wii right now, or else I'd buy/play more games. Good thing my neighor has one, or else my Wii experience would be limited to Excite Truck.  :|

The girl, easily. You'll have plenty of time to play with the Wii after you're done romancing.

...even better? Play the Wii with her...good bonding time for anyone!

The 2D and 3D iterations of Zelda different so greatly from one another, that I can't pick one 'best Zelda'. I'll pick my favorite 3D, and my favorite 2D Zelda.

2D
My favorite 2D Zelda would have to be The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past. I got it on my tenth birthday with my SNES (it was a pack-in game) To be honest, it was my first experience with the series and really, my first experience with Nintendo in general. So, I popped the game in and started playing--I don't know what it was; the graphics? the exploration? whatever it was, I loved it and was in awe from the moment I awoke in Link's little house until I defeated Gannon. Great game, I really loved the parallel dark world. 'The world felt absolutely HUGE at the time.

3D
As of right now, it's the Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I haven't got a chance to get really deep into what Twilight Princess has to offer yet, so my choice stands. Zelda:OoT was great in terms of combat development and story-immersion. I was actually really shaked when I (as adult Link) emerged from the Temple Of Time and saw the post-apocolyptic version of Hyrule. It was a really chilling thing to see, to be honest. I was also a pretty big fan of the game's dungeon design. (IMO, Windwaker has superior dungeon design, but OoT was great for it's time.)

Let's be honest here though, has anyone ever played a truely bad Zelda? I know I haven't. Heck, even Zelda 2: The Rerturn of Link had a pretty cool concept. The Zelda franchise is simply amazing and it deserves the 'AAA' status it currently has.  :-D

I'm a tad disappointed with the Wii VC line-up so far. I was hoping that Nintendo would launch a few more titles along side the application.  They should have beefed up the line-up with a few 16bit classic RPGs. (Mother, Star Ocean, Tales, Super Mario RPG?) RPGs would have really saved the VC launch, imo.

RPGs, thankfully, will come in time--I hope we see the one's I've listed above, as well as other RPGs from the era. (NES RPGs would be awsome too, Dragon Quest!)

I wish more N64 games would have been made available as well...SIN AND PUNISHMENT NOW PLEASE! But like I said, more titles will come in time. Until then, I'll be playing Zelda, and Trauma Center.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attourney

The game sorta came out of nowhere, and it rocked. Humor, cool touch screen use and a decent amount of challenge. It really is one of (if not THE) best DS game to date. I love that we're getting more Phoenix Wright love on the DS. Now let's all hope for a Wii version.  :-D
37  Nintendo DS / DS - General / Re: Tell me why you love the DS! on: December 03, 2006, 08:50:48 PM
Why do I love the DS?

Dual Screens:
-Games like Castlevania Dawn Of Sorrow, and Mario Kart DS both benefit from the two screens alot. The simple addition of a map has greatly improved the ease of play in those games that I mentioned. The former for the most part--love that map in Castlevania.

Touch Screen:
-Stuff like Pac 'n Roll and Kirby Canvas Curse prove that the touch screen is awsome. Magical Starsign make a pretty cool use of the touch screen as well. By far my favorite RPG on the system.

Games:
-2D heaven! All these 2D games are completely awsome(Castlevania, Magical Starsign, Children Of Mana, Kirby, etc)--mix with a nice selection of 3D (Dragon Quest Monster, FF3, Starfox, Mario Kart, etc). Graphical appreciation aside, the games I've mentioned are all great as well.

Not all of the reasons I love the DS, but my most important points are there.
38  Everything Nintendo / 2000 and Up! / Re: Name that Game!!! (basically I need help) on: December 09, 2006, 07:37:56 PM
I had both of the Goemon games on the N64. Mystic Ninja (the  fully 3D one) was kinda bad...Goemon's Great Adventure was my personal favorite. Neither of those is as good as the DS version though--it reminded me a of a mix of Zelda and the SNES Goemon games. I would reccomend to check it out, but it's text heavy and probably too hard for anyone who doesn't have basic knowlage of the japanese language.

It's still a good game though, HOPEFULLY Konami gets around to localizing it...but I doubt they will, it's a shame.

40  Nintendo Wii / Game Chat / Re: Harvest Moon Heroes on: December 03, 2006, 09:17:22 PM
I'm really looking forward to HArvest Moon Heroes. A motion-based farm sim like Harvest Moon would suit the Wii well. I do hope that it's better than A Wonderful Life though. The videos look pretty nice--clean presentation. Does this have a US release date yet?
41  Everything Nintendo / Everything - General / Re: Which Zelda version (Wii or GCN)? on: December 04, 2006, 06:21:33 PM
The Wii version. I'm getting the Wii version for alot of reasons:

-16:9 Widescreen
-480p
-Superior Wiimote Control
-Future Downloadable Content

I really see no reason at all to buy the GCN version--it's inferior in pretty much every conceivable way. Aside from those of us who are avid Zelda fans, and want the GCN version for collection purposes, there's no reason to purchase the GCN version, the Wii iteration is, quite frankly, better.

Yup, I have a white Onyx DS Lite--I love the thing. Stylish, compact and it can take a beating. Never before has a handheld uhm...held my interest as much as the DS has. It pretty much has every genre covered thoroughly as well. (Except sports, but I'm not a huge fan of sports other than golf/mario sports.) I must admit though, to owning, and liking Madden 2007 DS

Soo much has come out for the DS in the last year that I've bought, or am planning to buy:
-Starfox Command
-Magical Starsign
-Resident Evil Deadly Silence
-Final Fantasy 3
-Children Of Mana
-True Swing Golf
-Megaman ZX
-Rocket SLime
...alot more too.

Not only that, but it has a great 2007 lineup as well. With stuff like:
-Diddy Kong Racing
-Proffessor Layton
-Hotel Dusk
-Final Fantasy XII Reverant Wings
-Phoenix Wright 4 (and 2, right?)
-Pokemon Pearl/Diamond
...and more here too.

It's weird, I've never really liked handhelds until the DS.

For starters the artificial intelligence is just horrid, like 80s horrid. The way the bad guys popped up from obvious hiding places or charged down long hallways at you made the game feel like one of those old light gun titles, essentially a cleverly disguised shooting gallery

Point taken, the AI is pretty atrocious--but it's really the only way the game could be played. The way the controls are set up, with the odd (see: large) bounding box, would make it wayy too difficult to play the game. You can't turn fast enough to take out enemies from multiple directions--so the light gun feel is kind of a blessing.

Quote
Oh, and the voice acting is crap, absolute crap.

It's supposed to be--just look at the commercial. The game never takes itself to seriously, it's a harkening back to the cheesy kung-foo movies of the 1970s. I don't see the complaint here--it's a style choice, not a flaw.

Quote
The thing I found most troubling about the game was the way the character's hand seem to sort of bend the wrong direction while holding the gun. I think this was because the sensor showed I was pointing slightly to the right, more than I was, and it translated that into this weird, physically impossible wrist turn.

Sounds like a player problem more than a problem with the game...I don't have a Wii, so I've only played the game for 2-3 hours...but I haven't experienced this problem...yet.

Like I said, Red Steel isn't without it's issues--they just aren't as problematic as reviewers would lhave you believe. It's solid, but not great...it is what it is: a great concept with a mediocre first person shooter wrapped around this concept. Hopefully the already planned sequel will expand upon this concept, and they'll make a great game out of it.

The audio is great though, I have no idea what the review is talking about there--Tom Salta is an amazing composer.
44  Nintendo Wii / Game Chat / Re: Red Steel on: December 03, 2006, 09:11:06 PM
I don't understand the hate from some of you.

"I heard it's bad, but I haven't played it."

The fact that you haven't played it makes your opinion on the game completely moot. Want your "opinion" to have some level of credibility? THEN PLAY THE GAME FOR YOUTSELF INSTEAD OF LETTING SOMEONE ELSE FORM ONE FOR YOU!  :x
The game isn't bad at all, a little cookie cutter and a tad linear--but certainly not deserving a 5 or 6--from my play time, I'd give the game about a 7.5--which is far from bad, it's admirable.
