Maybe Nintendo is finally going to release game updates and new levels and stuff.  I don't know about Ds connectivity because there really wouldn't be much to do that I can think of.  But I don't have the game, so I wouldn't know...

Well here's a screen shot of this mysterious DS on the wall.

Seems like modded PAL Wii's are being bricked by the NTSC Paper Mario update.

Quote
1. turn on your wii without a game disc in
2. perform a system update and follow it until the system reboots
3. perform system updates until you get a message telling you there are no more updates available.
4. boot up your wii then inster the game disc
5. when you go into the disc channel, you will be asked to perform an update
6. make sure your internet connection is available then click OK to perform the update
7. once your wii reboots, you can play this awesome game!

I have gotten further in the game, and I know what that DS on the wall in the cook's room is for. It is used in the game to tell you how to make certain recepies with food and different items. When it says update, that means you can add more recepies to the list already on the DS. There will be no DS to Wii connectivity with this game.

well that makes sense i guess by why in the heck would they place a ds in the middle of a game sounds fishy to me and even weirder if it stores receipes then i would be able to access it which im still not able to and im on chapter 5 and almost completed the game so i think it still is a little screwy

It's not that weird that a Mario game would have a Nintendo handheld console that did something in the game.  In Luigi's Mansion, you use a gameboy-like thing that gives you info about your surroundings...

Paper Mario is infamous for its real world references and its offbeat humour.  It often makes reference to other games (there is a perfect recreation of world 1-2 from the original Super Mario Bros) and to other systems.  That is why the cook's recipie list looks like a DS.  Nothing more.

That's one of the main things that separates this Mario series from the rest of the Mario games.  It's like playing one of the beset franchises ever and watching a comedy show, but the comedy relates to what you are playing.  :-)
