Thanks to some saavy shutterbugs, reports have surfaced on the web suggesting Nintendo didn't actually have any working Wii consoles at last week's E3. Instead, the Wii demonstrations people were lining up to play with were actually running on current-generation GameCube hardware. Nintendo has since come forward to clarify that while GameCube hardware was present, it's actually modified with components more in line with what we can expect for the Wii:

Nintendo confirmed that they did indeed use GameCube housing, but that the "guts" or internal architecture was certainly from the Wii. "The Wii hardware we exhibited at E3 2006 was made specifically for the E3 show and is not the final mass-production version. Some of this hardware was cased in Nintendo GameCube housing," the company explained.
On the flip side, this implies what E3 goers were experiencing was not wholly indicative of the Wii, despite it documented lack of muscle. Of course this will depend on how much more work can be done with the Wii at this stage before its scheduled Q4 launch.

While I was not able to log into my account name on this site for whatever reason, I did some research on Nintendo's performance at E3. I suppose this tidbit of news (which I assume true) could be taken as good news as well as bad news. The Wii isn't finished, which isn't a shocker, after all at the E3 expo, Nintendo never announced an official date (which is why I am confused as to what day the ticker on the front page of this site is counting down to, however Nintendo did say it was going to launch in the forth quarter). Now, the good news is that the Wii is going to be even better. If the Wii at E3 was just a hybrid of the Gamecube, then one would expect it to be amped up even a bit more by the launch date.

Let me know what you think, and if you have heard otherwise on this.

No more problems with the site. I was real dissapointed this morning when I couldn't get on. While I was on break at work, I called my girlfriend and was telling her she'd be happy because I wouldn't be spending my time on that wii-volution.com site no more since I can't get on it anymore and my hype for the Wii would go down a little so I wouldn't bounce around her yelling, "I'm going to buy a Wii!"

Anyways...I'm glad to hear someone else heard about this. I wasn't sure how to take it. If Nintendo was just screwing with us, or that the Wii is only going to get better.

It seems a lot of you are taking this as good news. But still shouldn't it be a dissapointment, because now we're going to have to wait a little more longer until we can actually grasp that wii-mote and fish as Link.

I hear ya.

I've been teling friends about my decision on the Wii and trying to convince them that, that is the way to go. Everything else is too expensive, and just an extension of what has already been done. The Wii is something new. I think I've been able to at least, make one interested in the Wii. While the others are convinced of the 360....

I hate Microsoft in the gaming industry. Their making it into a computer. And Sony has followed them. I want a friggin' game....thank God for Nintendo.

side note - thats why gamecube cant play dvds, its a game system not a multimedia player.

i do the same and most people are with me that i talk to but one sony fanboy is for the ps3 and psp over wii and ds. although he cant name a single good game for the psp, and besides games, nothing that seperates it from an expensive iPod.
