Buried at the bottom of an IGN preview for the Wii's Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam is the news that not only is this game not going to feature any online component, but every 3rd-party game that comes out for the Wii won't support anything online either. Not until 2007 will publishers be able to offer up Wi-Fi gaming to eager players who picked up a Wii.

IGN Says: "Gamers hoping for an online component, however, are in for bad news, because one isn't planned. Activision would not say why, but IGN has separately learned from multiple development sources that Nintendo will not release Wii Wi-Fi Connection libraries to third parties until early 2007, which means that no third party launch title will have an online mode."


This is a bit of a let-down, isn't it?

Yep. No chance of any massive Red Steel online showdowns or updates and stuff for 3rd party games.  :(  At least we'll stll yhave virtual console.

Don't worry, there can still be 3rd party WiFi Support for the games that come out before 2007, remember the download feature on the Wii? So there is still a bit of hope.

But surely they can't put the download feature into games until Nintendo tells them how to in 2007, can they?

They can use the download feature now, it's just WiFi they can't but they should be able to have WiFi multiplayer downloadable after 06.

I'll be ok with Nintendo release the libraries early '07, at least it won't be the end of '07, then I'd be pissed. I'm not good in the area of online gaming but, wouldn't it be possible like Metroid said, using the Connect24 to allow an update of the libraries to enable multiplayer function? If there's no way this can happen, these 3rd parties better release these games, *cough RED STEEL cough*, with the updated online multiplayer option. Ah, it still seems like it will be a good classic like Goldeneye 64, a wonderful 4-split screen multiplayer game.

that kinda sucks...because there are a lot of good third party titles out there......like uh.......let me see.........there was that, wait no........... :-P

Personally, I think I'd like the 1st party games to be the only ones that have online. It makes things much more simple for Nintendo.

online has never been available for launch on any system except the 360 and even though the only things that supported it were sports titles and cod 2. i knew there wouldnt be online play for any of the launch titles. not even first party titles out at launch will prolly offer online play and if they do its prolly only gonna be excite truck which last my sources found HAS no online play. this really shouldnt come as a shock to anyone here. i will still be buying a nintendo wi fi adaptor at launch so i can update and be prepared for the titles that do offer online. just think, well be playing online on the wii before the 360 fanboys have their precious halo 3. patience is a virtue.

Does that mean SSBB won't be a wifi game? it isn't a third-praty title, but it has a third-party character (Snake)

MAn, I'll be SO pissed off if SSBB doesn't have Online gaming. But SSBB will be amazing. Also Animal Crossing Wii will be amazing. But Super Mario Galaxy will be the best.

SSBB better have online playing- that would make the best multiplayer experience! tournaments right in your own home!

you guys dont read much, do you? Nintendo said that online gaming is coming to america in the first half of 2007. SSBB is supposed to be coming out in late summer. so chances are, it will have online playing.

its confirmed by many sites that SSBB will have online just like battalion wars 2 (cant wait)

I dont know. maybe they will have like 30 hidden characters. Do they normally announce the hidden ones before the game comes out?

no, but they have only announced 9 characters, where 4 of them are unlockable and 1 is a transform. they said they would have at least 50 characters. they could at least announce the returning characters!
