Title: The Wii friends system...
Post by: JoNoH on June 06, 2006, 11:56:21 AM
With all this hype of Connect24 and whatnot, I got to thinking about what I'd like to see in a Wii friends system.  Since it's connected 24, would you like your friends to see what offline game you're playing right now?  Maybe an away message?  What about connecting to your online game?  Think there should be a subscription fee?  What about delivery of trailers and demos?

I want as much Wii goodness as possible incorporated into the friends system.   It's something that hasn't been revealed - beyond what the Nintendo DS currently has (which is MUCH less than what I'd like to see).

Any ideas, thoughts or comments?  :D

Ever use the Friends system on Valves Steam? I'm sure something like that will be incorporated, we can all play together! yay!

Funny you should say that.  Valve's friends system is exactly the opposite of what Wii needs.  It was up and down for the greater part of 4 years and I'm still not sure if it's working or not. 8O

same here.  I heard it was about 4.5 hours of HL2 goodness.  Perhaps we can hope to see HL2 on the Wii :)  It could interact with Steam... 8O

With the way things are looking, the Wii no doubt could handle HL2 and then some, would be interesting to see it make its way there. Anyone here play DoD or CS???

That would be awesome... it'd be so cool to talk to your friends online via the Wii. And then playing with them online... I don't think there will be a subscription fee 'cause it should come with WiiConnect24, and trailers and demo's will probably be uploaded automatically by that as well. But then it'd be falling into more of a "computer" pattern, which I'm not sure is a bad thing or not. What if there are viruses on the Wii? Or lagging? I'd rather play on my GameCube than on my PC, for example. But I do love games such as Counter Strike, even though I haven't played in a while.

Honestly, I'm hoping that Nintendo ditches the idea of friend codes like the DS has.  A more X-Box live approach would work the best.

Yeah, I don't like how you have to use a different Friend Code for every different DS game... it gets kind of annoying... but I think it's awesome how they made a multiplayer with the New Super Smash Bros. using only one game cartridge. That's helpful...

I know the 360 allows you to play games offline, but talk (via headset) to friends online while playing that game. I think that is a neat idea, and little tid bits like this should be incorporated. Nintendo seems to know what its doing, however this would be Nintendo's first home console that will go online....right? I don't know much about the Gamecube, so correct me if I'm wrong....but if this is the first, then there could be problems. Sony's first online network was free but horrible. Microsoft's was awesome, but cost big bucks (then again a computer company should get this right). It'll be interesting to say the least.

Does anyone know if Nintendo is planning on keeping the idea of being able to play DS or Advance Games or just and Gameboy game on the Wii? Or at least being able to have games transfer over, kinda like that one Zelda game....?

You're right, this will be Nintendo's first home console with online features. I honestly don't know what they have up their sleeves with this one, but they have told us a few things. Their will be Wii/Ds connectivity, so you can download demos on the DS from the Wii. Not sure about being able to play DS games on the Wii though... There will probably be something like talking with friends online, not sure if its via a headset... Not sure about transfers either.

Thanks Disaster!

I come to this site searching for more answers to my gaming addiction problem and what next generation game console will best comfort my disturbing habits of hours upon hours of gaming. Therefore, this site pretty much serves me as my information center.

Anyways, Nintendo always seems to know what its doing unless that is if you don't own a Nintendo. Then it just appears that Nintendo is trying to be weird. For example, when I first saw the GC controller, I thought Nintendo was playing an enormous joke on the world. Until I got the dumb preschool looking controller in my hand and decided that it was the best controller to date, and that the odd shaped buttons allowed for easy gameplay (with the exception of the hidden Z). Moral to the story: Nintendo knows what its doing, even if it doesn't appear that way. I hope this trend continues on with the Wii's internet connection.

The fact that it is Nintendo's first online try should make us not ask a lot. Just keep it average when it comes to options (I mean, do we really need to talk to each other via headsets or is it that important to have 100000 skins for the interface) and keep it free when it comes to subscription fees...

I just really hope they get it right, there's a lot riding on the online component.

I would suggest they get advice from Microsoft, but I'm not too sure if they're on good terms... I would think they are, since they both share the Sony enemy.

Business-wise, Microsoft's LIVE service has been a big success.  They've proven that they can charge per month for an online service catering to console gamers...who knew that would take off?  I wouldn't be surprised to see a subscription model similar to theirs show up for the Wii.  Although I suspect it will be less expensive and most likely the games that use it will come with a set number of month's worth of use for free.  :)    I hope, at least.  :P

I hope the Wii's online feature will be free. PS2's was free, but it was crap. Xbox cost money and it was great. But the thing with Nintendo is that it thinks of the future.

I hope they keep it free. It is only a game. And its always fun to play with others, and I shouldn't be charged to play with others or to make friends. I believe paying to have a "friendship" with someone is called prostitution.

I want it F-R-E-E. The DS has WiFi connection, and thats free. Why not cram that into the Wii? If it can fit in my pocket, I'm sure it can fit into the Wii....

Nah... Ask Sega for advices, no matter Dreamcast had a different system. I am sure both Ninty and Microsoft know Sony lost this game so they are aware that the enemy is each other.t

I think we can't just count out Sony right now, because Microsoft and Sony are what appeals to America as of now. Sony appeals to the world more so the Microsoft at this moment, because of the failures of the beginning days of Xbox. However, Microsoft has cleaned up and it will be a serious contender in the next year.

I won't count out Sony, because for a long time they had the 'boomerang' controller, but changed it at E3 when they realesed the final controller which will (like the Wii-mote) sense motion, but only forward, back, up, down, left, right. But due to this added feature, they removed the rumble feature in the controller which I see as a downner because that little rumble often serves a large purpose in most games. Sony didn't do well at E3, but that just be a sign for the PS3 to change more and many people have complained of the price, but I still see people reserving PS3s at EB. So there is a possibility to change, Sony does listen. But Sony is also relying on UMDs becoming popular --- and if they do not, then good bye PS3.

At E3, Nintendo was marvelous and I think it built a lot of good hype up. Hardcore gamers and loyal nintendo fans are looking forward to it, but the Wii still has a lot to prove since its appearance in not traditional and to many, it is very unorthodox to use a tv remote controller as the game console's controller.

Only the future will tell...but right now, Nintendo has beaten PS3 at E3. And some may argue outdid Xbox 360 as well, but I know a lot of kids who love their 360 and are spreading the news...while I tell them I'm going to buy a Wii, and they just look at me with a blank face, blink their eyes several times, and break out into laughter at my 'stupidity.'

Nintendo needs to earn back its reputation. Hopefully, the Wii can do it for Nintendo.
