Title: Sony GripMote
Post by: Puff Daddy on February 18, 2007, 09:22:28 PM
Nintendo has the Wiimote. Sony has the GripMote...or at least the patent. Check it out:

i can only see that working well with driving games...but even then...it would probably be a bit sketchy. i like the idea though. if they refine it etc, i could see this working.

Good God. Sony can't make their own damn ideas anymore.

This looks fun for a Star Wars Podrace game. That's pretty much it.

but i do have to say they should do this for the dieing ps3... seeing as you can have 7 blue tooth controllers for the ps3... it would help sales

But you know Sony will overcharge this. At this point, I'm thinking the only thing that will help PS3 sales is nothing short of MGS4.

i don't even think that will help.... very much

sony is in a real pickle now, they have two systems that are vastly outselling and outproducing them at a cheaper cost...its an econ nightmare...

I would expect some major changes to be made in the not too distant future with the PS3 and with sony's entire entertainment line (hoping for a PSP with internal hard drives)

I'd prefer internal flash than a hard-drive on a PSP. Of course, I'd prefer even more some good games on the thing.

The only way MGS4 won't help PS3 sales is if Kojima goes "Indian Giver" on the exclusivity of it. Metal Gear being my favorite series of all time, I won't have any problem getting my hands on a PS3 for a while just to play it, but I'd be way more willing to get a 360 for it, seeings how there are some actual games on that.

Actually, you can only connect four controllers for the PS3. If you check the back of the controller, if you own one, there are only four LED's and on the console when pressing the PlayStation button, and go to the controllers, there are only four areas for the controllers.

Anyway, companies make patents everyday. Most of said patents are usually forgotten about and just speculated by the press.

Also:
LOL that is so stupid how the hell are you suppose to play with that?

Isn't that what most people said about the Wiimote? I could recall my friends saying "How the hell are you suppose to play with a... controller?" But now see how successful the Wii is? The market is too unpredictable now, anything can sell if it's good enough.

well when the ps3 came out i heard 7 blue tooth devices

Bluetooth devices does not equal controllers though.

And a valid point, if the idea is backed with thought and interest, it will sell. Sony's problem is they looooove money, and don't care how they get it.

then again...what major corporation (hell, even minor corporations) doesn't love money?

Sony's problem is they looooove money, and don't care how they get it.

Sony will treat consumers and customers like utter garbage for some bucks. There is NOTHING wrong with making money whatsoever, I just don't like their method of obtaining it now. Customer service is what it's all about.

thats why nintendo kicks ass..... but if sony was like this with ps2 how did they get 75% of the market shares... and nintendo got like 5% and xbox got like 20%

Sony dominated because they were less arrogant last time. They thought that just because they won the 6th gen, their system would be an instant best seller.

Hmm.... Grip... Squeezing each side to activate stuff... I think I've seen that before. OH! RIGHT! The Gamecube's L and R buttons could detect pressure in order to tell how far they were pressed down. Isn't that exactly what this gripmote would do?

The PS2 controller could tell the pressure in all of its buttons (most 6th gen could do this, take for example playing madden....mash that pass button down and its a bullet, but gently tap it and its a long loft) so quit the Sony bashing.

The Gripmote senses motion as well as how hard someone is grasping.

imagine this as an extinction to the wiimote!!

Sony bashing? Last generation I would have told everyone PS2 was simply the greatest cause of the HUGE variety of games for everyone. Not all of them were classics, but some were just fun, and that really hits home with me. This gripmote idea sounds really tacked on to me, like it's a last-ditch effort to squeeze some money from rich kids who think they're cool (think Power Glove on NES.)

Sadly, yes... Pressure sensitive buttons were idealized with the DualShock2.

Sony's take on last gen was awesome. They got their system out first, had a built-in DVD player and as with all Sony game systems, they don't really care who they license people to make games with. That's why the amount of PS2 games compared to Xbox and Gamecube are astronomical. If anyone feels like developing a game, they just ask Sony and they get the devkit, Sony slaps their name on the disc, and bam. This led to tons of crappy games, but a few gems being PS2 only were made.

that is very true...

The only part of the gripmote glove I was defending was the pressure sensing which was PS2/Xbox/Gamecube era. I think the idea itself is dumb. It could work for a few games, but very few.

And that itself is true. I'm mostly upset that Sony thinks they can get away with sucking more bucks from people by using an unimaginitive idea using old or ripped-off technology.

Motion sensing is nothing new. So does that mean Nintendo is sucking bucks out of our pockets and brainwashing us to no ends?

I can't c the picture but this idea is dumb.
They are just doing this to build off the Wii's success and i don't think it'll work. The PS3 needs some help catching up and it can do this only by better games and a better online service.

The idea behind Motion Sensing being the focus of a home console is a new idea. Regular motion sensing has been around for a long time, just never really perfected.

If Sony had this idea/patent during the end of the PS2 era, it would have been genius, regardless of if it sold or not. It would have crippled (or at least damaged) Nintendo and a LOT would be different now. The fact that Sony "thought-up" this idea AFTER seeing the success the Wii has gotten makes me doubt their credibility on the originality of the product.

Erm... The ps3 can have 7 controllers. There are only four indicator lights, but it goes like this:

(o...=1) (oo..=2) (ooo.=3) (oooo=4) (.ooo=5) (..oo=6) (...o=7) .
And also, this idea would only work for simulators. Imagine a shooting game. Nope.

Well ladies and gentleman, since this post has turned into an unofficial hate Sony's PS3 thread I figured I'd give you some other things to ponder about. Sony just unvieled these at GDC (Game Developer's Convention):

Home (think Miis + Second Life x 10oz of cool):

Little Big Planet (create your own platform levels, the video is of a user created level):

Home looks like a pretty well thought out idea and looks promising. And Little Big Planet looks really fun.

Hate PS3 thread. Nice.

Home was always interesting to me... it'll give me something to do when I need to take breaks from Metal Gear Solid 4.

And if you recall... I never said I hated the PS3, just that Sony really fumbled on the system launch and original ideas. If they recover quickly, they could easily make up that lost ground and give the other systems a definite run for their money. As with the Wii, the PS3 is capable of amazing things that we probably won't see for a while... especially if Sony keeps wasting their time with Gripmotes and doesn't start focusing on games.
