Nintendo DS Modification Reviews

The one most important thing that I love about the DS is the vastly growing array of modifications, from official to third-party, you name it! We have everything from a web browsers to a complete media center in the palm of your anticipated hands. Lets see what we have;
Nintendo Max-Media Player 4-Gig
What is this beast?
It's a 4-gig hard drive for you Nintendo DS.
What can it do?
Just about anything your heart desires. You can store up to 10 full length high quality DVD movies, up to 1,000 tracks of your favoirte MP3's and up to 1,000 photos. Not only that, but unlike other DS mods, you can buy these locally at BestBuy for $50
GBA Movie Player
With this modification you can not only play movies, ebooks, pictures and music, but you can load GBA Roms, NES Roms, GB Roms, Genesis Roms, NDS Roms, Linux, AIM, Yahoo, etc. Alright, sounds like a dream, no? This little nifty hardware fits into the GBA slot of your DS (hardly works in GBA). It's about $24.00 if you can find it anywhere. You can insert up to a 1-gig SD card into it.
DS Web Browser
Hmm, pretty cool. The name says it all. You can browse the internet with your DS, join chatrooms and that's about it. The second screen works as a Zoom, and a digital keyboard, while the top screen works as a veiw of the whole site. It's nifty I suppose. It comes with a 32mb memory upgrade for about $50 via online.
DS Linux
http://dslinux.org/
Not a Linux fan? This mod allows you to install an operating system onto your DS. I havent looked into it, but I've seen screenshots of people watching broadcasted television. Check out the site
http://dslinux.org/
PassMe
http://www.ndsmods.com/
"PassMe is a device designed by Natrium42 based off of the first DS passthrough made by DarkFader using an FPGA dev kit. It redirects the DS to a GBA Flash cart, so you can run your own program (roms) on the Nintendo DS. For PassMe to work it requires the use of a commercial NDS cart (for authentication) and a GBA Flash cart to hold your DS programs."
The site says it all, check it out
NDS SuperCard SD / CF
http://www.gameboy-advance.net/nintendo_ds/nds-supercard.htm
Lets you put NDS roms on a SD or CF card to be played on DS through the GBA slot. Sounds Neat

So that's about it. I might update the list later.

wow, so many cool things the DS does. If only they could upgrade the graphics to the point of where I can't see the little pixel squares if I look closely :-(

Lots of cool things out there. The legality of how some of them are used is a whole nother issue.

My girlfriends mate has the hard drive and can watch movies. Apparently it's pretty cool.

That's not always a bad thing.
Think about it like this;
In the future you're playing the new Nintendo Tenkai handheld, Using the latest state-of-the art technology and foundation structures. Well, It's all that and a bag of chips, but you'll look back at your NDS and think "I miss those good old days". Would you rather enjoy what they offer now, or complain about what they don't offer. The Nintendo DS is a technology in itself, it's what we have

There's newer carts out there that are a all-in-one solution. Like the NinjasPass X9TF, so the only other thing you need is a Micro-SD (TF) Card. The only bad thing about the 1-slot carts is that they don't have gba support. I ended up getting another cart, but this time I got an older on that would support my SD card.

If you could buy a DSlite, that plays games and the ability to play movies over a portable DVD player, which plays movies. I'd go with the DS.

good point. it just seems like a waste to make a DS movie watcher, especially on those small screens. what do they use the other screen for while you watch a movie?

GBAMovie Player
Uses only 1 screen
Max-Media Player
The top screen is the video, while the bottom is the controls/sound/timeline.

I sure like these 2 since an NDS emulator on pc doesn't work that well and it's more fun to play it on a real DS (+ there are games that I first want to try before buying them).
