From what I believe/think they will be able to do those things. Elebits, first game online, will also have downloadable content, user-made custom maps, etc. I don't see why they couldn't add multiplayer, however doing it with some launch games will have to take up part of the tiny 512MB flash memory. I bought another 1GB SD card for $9.99 just in case of the extra content later available to certain games. Shouldn't have to worry about any newer games coming out as if should already have online multiplayer included on the disc.
EDIT:

where did you find a $9.99 1 GB SD card? I want one!
At my local Fry's Electronics, which the 1GB SD Card is normally $19.99, then with a $10 mail-in rebate it comes to $9.99 .

While I'm loving my Wii, I would tend to agree with most of the issues brought up in that article. Most of them, if they don't end up being corrected, I can live with. However, I would really like to see the issue with SD cards being fixed. It's definately a pain to be unable to use it for anything other than strictly storage. With that being said, I have to wonder if it would even be possible to fix with just a firmware update. Would there be too much lag in reading off an SD card for you to play a VC game directly off it?
Oh well. In the meantime, I shall continue to enjoy the hell out of this excellent system.

Well it's not really a help to anyone since you can't go back in time, but my friend and I picked up Sandisk 2GB SD Cards for $29.99 each at Best Buy on Black Friday.
To Kris: Playing a VC game off the SD card shouldn't cause lag, but I think in making the person put it from the SD Card to a channel helped out Nintendo, otherwise it would have left a big hole for hackers to run unassigned code from the SD Card.

It's not really 'what went wrong with the Wii' it's just IGN Wii's ideas about improving the ideas and fundamentals of the Wii and it's channels.
