Building up to E3 we all knew that Nintendo's showing was going to be weak at best. Instead of giving hardcore gamers a reason to rejoice Nintendo decided to lighten it up by showing the typical casual gamer lineup. It's gotten to the point where it seems like Nintendo is nothing more than casual. The Wii is basically that, with the potential for something better, but not exactly taking advantage of the technology in the best way possible.
"If there is any perception that Nintendo is ignoring the core gamers,
it's a misunderstanding we really want to get rid of by any means," Iwata said. "We are sorry about [the
E3] media briefings, specifically for those who were expecting to see
Nintendo show something about 'Super Mario' or 'Legend of Zelda.'
However, the fact of the matter is the so-called 'big titles' need a
long, long development period. ... We really didn't think this year's
E3 media briefing was the time to [announce them]."
In all fairness it's understandable if there wasn't anything to show. But on another note they made it very clear that they believe E3 isn't for the hardcore anymore. With the holiday season getting ever closer you have to wonder what Nintendo plans on doing to stimulate sales for the next few months. Maybe they aren't worried about that but there is a sense in the air that this season will belong to Sony with their Playstation and perhaps Microsoft's Xbox will pick up the pace as well.
